Realistic Fiction Inspired Writing

This page is designed to share the realistic fiction texts we have written in class as a result of our realistic fiction unit of study.  Our course text, Units of Study is based on the underlying framework that what we write should be inspired by what we read. From immersing ourselves in a variety of well-written realistic ficiton and spending time in close study noticing author's craft, we have each tried our hands at writing our own realistic fiction.  Please post yours here and specifically address "What have you read that is like what you are trying to write?"  In other words, let us know your mentor text(s) and any author's craft you were intentional about implementing.   *Please add your first and last name and the title and author of your text with your post.

Realistic Fiction Unit of Study by Bonnie Cumbo

I chose this unit of study to use with a second grade class.  We used two mentor texts.  They were Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow Moon by Cynthia Rylant and Wilson Sat Alone by Debra Hess.  Then we created a noticings chart listing the characteristics of realistic fiction.  Then the students began to work on their own piece of realistic fiction.  They included some of the characteristics of the mentor texts that we used in class.

Here are a few student samples. I will take these pieces and create a realistc fiction class book.
