Wilson Sat Alone Recommended by Bonnie Cumbo. This story is in the Harcourt reading series for 2nd grade. I used it for my unit of study for realistic fiction with my second grade class. Wilson is the shyest student in school. We all know how difficult that can be. All of the students leave him out because he keeps to himself and won't talk to anyone. But, when a new girl comes to his school, he watches how she becomes part of the crowd and when they go out on the playground, she insists that he become a part of her game. He does and finds a new friend.

Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell

This book overflows with voice. Little Molly Lou Melon does not listen to a negative voice in her head like so many people do. She listens to the wonderful voice of her grandmother. Her grandmother tells her that she can do anything that she wants to do, and when she finds that she has to move to another place, it turns out okay. Molly Lou has the courage to stand up to the mean actions of a bully at her new school. She also shows everyone how talented she really is. All children need to hear this read aloud.

Miss Fannie's hat is about a little old lady who decides to donate her favorite hat to the church's auction. Though this is a difficult decision, she knows it is the best choice when her church is able to use the money from the hat to fix some things around the church. It's also a great book for studying use of comma's, and transition words. The author also uses figurative language when she describe's Miss Fannie's hair to be "all nice and gray like the feathers of a dove." This is a delightful book!
