Class List Articles Noticings Chart

Page history last edited by Kim Sutherland 14 years, 5 months ago

From our whole group list articles mini-lessons and from our independent reading immersion and close study of chosen list articles, we've created this noticings chart of this genre.

Whole Group Noticings Chart from Class Discussion

*There was a sense of conciseness to the list article I read.  Some had minimal details and others had a little elaboration.  With 50 reasons you can pick and choose.  This makes it accessible for the reader.

*Pictures are also used in list articles.  Each list topic had a small visual that enticed the reader to look at that number.

*The topic of the list article matched the reference/resources listed.  For example:  If the article was related to health, then a health professional was cited.  **There are research sources embedded in the list article when necessecary to validate it.

*Short catchy phrases as subheadings or the list topics that helped entice the reader to read it.  Print styles were also used to entice the reader to see the subheadings such as bold/color/etc.

*Overall, wide range of list article topics.  Basically if you can write it, it can be done in a list article.

*The overall purpose is to inform the reader.  Sometimes this also included basic information or also a review.  The nature of the topic/content leads itself to the substructure.  For example:  product list articles tend to include a review and/or price and store information.  Historical list articles tend to include facts/dates/timeline, etc.  Health and wellness list articles will also include resources and references such as doctors/physician quotes, etc.

*Some list articles can be part of a series.  Sometimes this can be a continuing structure/column.

Southern Living "88 Home Tips" List Article- noticings Chart by Lori Milan

  • I love that you can read what you want in List Articles- They give a blurb a lot of times and you finish, if you want.
  • List articles also show relevant details. Some ideas are common sense, some need more details.
  • List articles usually begin with an explanation and end with a summary.
  • They aren't numbered.

www.charlestonmag.com Recommended by Kelly Compton Charleston  "Charleston 101 defining moments that shaped our City".  I visited Charleston over Spring Break and cam across this article. This article list the 101 highlights that that have helped to make Charleston what it is today.  The list is numbered, the topic is written in a different print style for each artifact, dates are given of the atifact, pictures of the artifacts are there to be seen so connections are made, font colors are used to grasp the attention of the reader, short excerts are given so the reader gets the information needed without a long drawn out story. This was a good read especially since I had just been there.

Noticings from Colorful Places Magazine by Amber Pitts

This is a magazine from a timeshare company that you can't buy, but here's the website: http://www.colorfulplaces.com/

My mentor text was an article in the magazine Colorful Places titled "4 Tasty Trips". It discussed places to visit based on the good food those places have to offer :) I tried to use bold words, instead of colors, to distinguish my headings. I also tried to offer some background knowledge about the food and Italy. Below are some things I noticed:

*It used colorful headings

*It offered different types of food (low country cuisine, seafood, over the top dining, and wine country) to reach more readers

*Uses photographs of the food, restaurant or chef

*Discussed different types of food using lots of details

*Offers some background knowledge about the type of food and chefs

*Gave contact info (phone number & website) for the restaurants

Reader's Digest February 2009

Reader's Digest suggested by Kim Wells

Reader's Digest frequently contains articles titled "Four Ways to Look at..." . Each article features ordinary objects with unusual function, location, appearance, or perspective. The text offers explanations of the photography which incidentally is reminiscent of National Geographic. The photographs are the feature here. Would make a good mentor text for pictures and captions.

Woman's World March 1, 2010

Recomended by Renee Phillips

I used the March 1 issue of Woman’s World. In this issue there were 8 List Articles and four others that included a list within the feature article.

  • ·         We think of them as being top 10 but the ones that I looked at were all 5.
  • ·         Used a variety of fonts and colors to draw the reader in and make it catch the eye.
  • ·         Photographs with captions
  • ·         Inserts to give extra information or interesting facts
  • ·         Boxes around sections
  • ·         Bullets and numbers within each number
  • ·         Introduction that reads like a narrative or a conclusion
