Mentor Texts for ABC Informational Text: JOBS   Amber McDonald

We had many mentor texts in our class for our ABC book study. We were able to have at least one book for each child to look through and have them make noticings with sticky notes. After looking through each of the books that we had we decided that writing a book as a class would be a great idea so that we could do it together before going on the endeavor alone. We knew that we had to do at least each letter of the alphabet and describe it with a letter, picture, and then a sentence about the letter so that it qualified as informational. In our 2nd grade SS standards as part of our communities studies we talk about goods and services in our community. The kids, on their own, thought that doing an ABC book on Jobs woudl be neat, since jobs are services. They did a great job taking what they knew about ABC books and applying it not only to the class book, but their own individual work.

Product DetailsSuperhero ABC by Bob McLeod

Students loved this book because it gave them a great opportunity to see an ABC book in a great fun way to read. This is on that was ALWAYS checked out of the library. I like how this book had a sentence, illustration, and letter all on one page, just as we wanted our books to be like.

Martha Vest's ABC Unit Project

Mentor Texts recommended by Martha Vest

I teach 6th grade math so I picked the ABC BOOK Study.  I used this with my students as a fun way to review and cement Geometry terms into their memories.

I used the following mentor texts for immersion and inspiration:

-Ashanti to Zulu by Margaret Musgrove

Product Details

In Ashanti to Zulu, Margaret Musgrove shows us the beauty of Africa. The author lived and studied in Ghana and this book proves her love for that country.

“A…is for Ashanti.  Ashanti weavers make a beautiful cloth called kente.  They weave it in bright silk threads and give each distinct design a name.”

The illustrations are gorgeous. An African couple beautifully dressed in colorful fabric admire the weavers busy at their looms.

-I Spy- AN Alphabet In Art by Lucy Mickethwait

Product Details

The author Lucy Micklethwait illustrates the alphabet with 26 of the most famous classical paintings. “Long before a child knows who Renoir, Vermeer, and Picasso are, their paintings will be familiar, friendly, and fun. There could be not better introduction to art than this unique art, alphabet, and puzzle book.”

For the S, the text is “I spy with my little eye something beginning with Pp”.  The painting is The Annuciation with St. Emidius.  Several P items to find here….palace, people walking, a peacock, and prayer.
