Multigenre Texts

Picture Books and Short Chapter Books

The Pot that Juan Built by Nancy Andrews-Goebell

Nobody Particular:  One Woman's Fight to Save the Bays by Molly Gang

Product DetailsMs. Frizzle's Adventures:  Ancient Egypt and other Magic Schoolhouse books by Joanna Cole

Recommended By: April Camp

I enjoy using Magic School Bus books becuase my students are able to relate to them and see real world experiences. We are able to discuss how the events can be realistic and how they can be unrealistic. We can also discuss the importance of what is being read about the different science topics and use the book as a way to explore the science that we may not be able to go out and see on our own. We can create our own field trip within the classroom.

Desert Seasons: A Year in the Mojave  Desert Seasons by Ruth K.A. Devlin

Resommended by Crystal Weathers.

This book is crafted like a journal and includes poetry, descriptions, narratives and defintions.

Front Cover   Regarding Trees  by Kate Klise

Recommended by Crystal Weathers.

The principal of the school wants to get bids on weeding the trees and there is a misunderstanding and everone thinks he is getting bids on a wedding. This books has lots of play on words and uses letters, newspaper columns, packing envelopes, menus, and editorials to make this a wonderful example of a mulit-genre book.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid [Book]    Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

Recommended by Crystal Weathers

I see mu children in the classroom read these all the time and it never once occured to me that it was mulit-genre until now. The books contain pictures, cartoons, posters and little signs.

Pirates by John Matthews: Book Cover   Pirates by John Matthews

Recommended by Crystal Weathers

See what it was like to be a pirate. The tales of adventure are written in blood and the book contains a booklet of pirate slang, an advertisement to recruit pirates, a booklet of pirate biographies, a letter from William III to Captain Kid, pirate weapons, a treasure map, wanted poster, playing cards.

Recycle!: A Handbook for Kids Recycle by Gail Gibbons                 The Vegetables We EatThe Vegetables We Eat by Gail Gibbons

Recommended by Lindsay Blanton. I thought books written by Gail Gibbons could be used for multigenre purposes.  She has many books that are literary nonfiction, but there are also other aspects in her books that could be used as multigenre.  There are so many titles to choose from, but I listed a few we have at our school.  Her website is helpful too, with many book titles.

Longer Books

 Book of World Records 2010

Recommended by Cathy Rode

This book is a big hit with my 6th graders.  It has every type of author's craft and it has great illustrations to go along with it. We are going to use it as a mentor text to create a class book of my studient's "greatest achievements".  I will let you know how it works out.

Nothing But the Truth:  A Documentary Novel by Avi

The Year of Our Revolution:  New and Selectd Stories and Poems by Judith Ortiz Cofer

Baidarka:  The Kayak by George B. Dyson

Regarding a Fountain:  A Tale, in Letters, of Liars and Leaks.

Armaggeddon Summer by Jane Yolen and Bruse Coville

Product DetailsThe Encyclopedia of the Ancient World by Charlotte Hurdman, Philip Steele, and Richard Thames

Recommended by Kimberly Trott

I have used this book as a reference book and as a book to help students develop ideas for their projects in class.  It's nice because it has images with long captions to explain them.  Next, there is factual commentary about the culture.  Finally, you will find how to activities that pictorally demonstrate how to create your own artistic item from the culture.
